The Council of Europe is an intergovernmental organisation comprising 47 member states in which over 300 languages are spoken, not including the community languages introduced through migration and which are sometimes spoken on a wide scale.
The Council of Europe has chosen to reflect the linguistic diversity in its 47 member states by representing (only) their national or official languages in the material specifically designed for the EDL (posters, stickers, lanyards), making a total of 41 different forms of linguistic expression (out of 6 000 or 7 000 worldwide).
The EDL website exists in the two official languages of the Council of Europe, French and English, in accordance with the Organisation’s rules. This site is regularly updated and includes a database in which events are recorded as soon as we are informed of them by the organisers.
Despite this, each year the National Contact Persons are invited to translate the press release published by the Council of Europe into their national/official language. These translations are then made available online.
