First Book Fair

 Fair, 23 Sep 2016 - 24 Sep 2016, Salvador, Brazil

Commemorated in the month of September, the European Day of Languages is an initiative that encourages people of all ages to learn new languages. This movement is motivated in Salvador by three institutions that house and promote cultures of nations of the Old Continent: the German Goethe Institut, the Spanish Instituto Cervantes and the Alliance Française. To commemorate the date, together, these institutions are promoting the First Book Fair, an event that celebrates languages and stimulates citizens of Salvador to have access to symbolic patrimonies of the countries represented. The programming takes place on the 23rd and 24th of September (Friday and Saturday), at the Alliance Française, open to the general public.

Music, readings, films, discussions and book sales will deepen the contact of the public with German, Spanish and French. Students of the three institutes are invited to showcase what they have already learned and widen that knowledge, while the general public will be called to experiment with different communication systems and venture into this large universe. Thus, the Goethe, Cervantes and Alliance exercise their purpose of strengthening their relations with Brazil and the world, and spreading their expressions and traditions while recognizing the importance of global, plural and intercultural transits.

The program starts with reading activities in German, Spanish and French at 2pm of the first day. The second day begins at 9am, and at 10.30am the discussion “Interculturality in Everyday Life” will take place. The day also includes the screening of movie trailers in their original languages starting at 2pm and at 5pm a music circle with songs in the three languages, as well as a karaoke at 6.30pm. Throughout the day, songs from each country create the soundtrack for the event and the book fair commercializes, at lower than average prices, copies of volumes present in each institution’s libraries and collections. All of the revenue generated by the sale of the books will be donated to the Community Cultural Space Pierre Verger, with headquarters in the neighborhood of Engenho Velho de Brotas, in Salvador.
