EDL week

 Language Week, 22 Sep 2025 - 26 Sep 2025, Gloucester, United Kingdom

We are running a number of events to promote European Day of Languages across a whole week. We are doing special lessons for every class in Y7, 8 and 9 looking at languages and also encouraging them to enter the competitions on the EDL website. We are holding a baking competition with a languages theme with cakes then sold and the money donated to charity. Our canteen is also putting on special European dishes for the day. We are also running a 'Hunt the hello' competition which encourages students to learn how to say hello in 30 different languages. WE are launching this with a special assembly to the whole school about the value of languages.

Vote for this year’s most innovative event!

To add a further element of spice to the Day, anyone visiting the website can vote for what they regard as the most innovative EDL event. This can be due to its creativity, transferability or just because it truly represents the spirit of the Day. Voting will be open for one month, from 20 September – 20 October, with the winner to be announced in December. There will be a small prize for the organizer of the event which receives the most votes.

2024's 'most innovative event' is
Long live the European Day of Languages/ Vive la Journée européenne des langues

The event received 1900+ votes and was organised by Lycée Alfred Mézières de Longwy, France.

Congratulations to the winners!

We were greatly impressed by the creativity and great effort which went into organising the events submitted and would like to thank all organisers of EDL events in 2024.
