Languages Open Hearts and Minds
Celebration,
01 okt 2025 - 15 okt 2025,
Komotini, Greece
Οur school has embraced the opportunity to fully enjoy the celebration of the
European Day of Languages, 26th September, since 2001, for a third year. We could not miss,
therefore, the chance to organize projects, support multilingualism, the beauty of uniting
everyone through communication, the power and special features every language has.
Valuing students’ creativity and special skills, A, B, E and F class united their abilities and
helped realise this two-week project.
All A class and B class students were introduced to a wide variety
of different countries, the languages of which are spoken in the European Union. In groups,
they were given flags of these countries which they had to colour and then name the
country by recognising its flag. Not only did they learn how to recognise each country but
also spot the country on the map of Europe, Asia, Australia or America, depending on where
the country is, as many different languages are spoken in the European Union. A short video
has been created, using pictures with all the children’s flags and the letters of the Alphabet
matching the first letter of each country, finally forming the message of the celebration for
this year “Languages open hearts and minds”. The children even learned how to pronounce
the message in the languages we learn at school.
At the same time, E class students, 5th Grade, learned the countries the languages of
which are spoken all over the world, their nationalities and the capital cities in English. They
listened to the words, tried to spell and pronounce them correctly, they used their
imagination and solved puzzles or tried to find the secret phrase-message combining the
initials of some of these countries. On a second phase, they created collages with A class,
trying to combine the flags A class created with the initial letters of the specific countries in
order to unscramble the message of this special day, the European day of Languages, for this
year, 2025.
In addition, F class students, 6th Grade, worked on the countries, the languages of
which are spoken not only in Europe but all over the world by recognising them, spotting
them on the map of Europe and the world map. They learned the countries the languages of
which are spoken in the European Union, their nationalities and capital cities, as well.
Everybody enjoyed it, played with flags and languages, learned to locate different
countries on the map. They became aware of language families spoken in Europe, read
posters, became aware of this year’s EDL logo and participated with their voice on the
European poll about what they consider the most difficult in learning a foreign language.
As a school, we love such initiatives and welcome participating in celebrations unifying
us through promoting languages and communication.
