Second Life

A virtual world where users can interact with each other through 3D avatars in real time. Users can create their own virtual world with their own avatars.

Evaluation: If teachers and students share interest in the virtual world, this is a great tool to use, where learners can use the target language in context. However, keep in mind that the creation of one´s own avatar and getting the hang of all the functions available may take some time. Also, bear in mind that Second Life is open to everybody, which may cause privacy issues when your students engage with unknown users. More advanced IT knowledge required for incorporating Second Life into your language learning curriculum in a quality way.
