ICC-Languages Webinar: Avoiding the Ravages of Reification with Constructivist Intercultural Concepts

This presentation will give examples of how reification of language and essentialist definitions can interfere with the effective practice of intercultural work. It will define the epistemological position of constructivism in contrast to other knowledge paradigms and suggest how constructivist definitions can generate more coherent training and education in the field. 🎤Speaker: Milton J. Bennett, PhD, is founder and co-director of the Intercultural Development Research Institute (Europe and USA – www.idrinstitute.org) and was a founding director of the Intercultural Communication Institute in Portland, OR. He has been an associate professor of intercultural communication at Portland State University and now teaches at the University of Milano Bicocca (Italy). He originated the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity and authored the text Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication: Paradigms, Principles, & Practices. Milton is a Returned US Peace Corps Volunteer and works a lot with various international exchange and multicultural programs on the topic of intercultural learning.
