Questa pratica prevede la scelta di una singola parola o frase che rifletta le tendenze sociali, culturali o politiche e gli eventi dell'anno. La parola dell'anno serve come rappresentazione simbolica della coscienza collettiva e dei temi prevalenti in una società. Cattura lo Zeitgeist e diventa un riflesso delle esperienze, delle preoccupazioni e delle aspirazioni condivise dalla popolazione.
