Každoročne sa krajiny v celej Európe zapájajú do tradície výberu „slova roka“. Je to výber jedného slova alebo slovného spojenia, ktoré odráža spoločenské, kultúrne alebo politické trendy a udalosti daného roka. Slovo roka slúži ako symbolické vyjadrenie kolektívneho vedomia a prevládajúcich tém v spoločnosti. Vystihuje ducha doby a stáva sa odrazom spoločných skúseností, obáv a túžob ľudí.
