5 Senses, the Window to the World of Languages

Language Day, 26 sep 2024, Bucharest , Rumänien

The students identify the 5 senses and they write them in English, on a piece of paper, drawing their hand. Then they draw more little hands, writing the senses in other languages such as French or German. Then they look at other languages which sound like French , such as Italian, Portuguese, Spanish or which sound like German, such as Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian. They explain the title of the activity which is a metaphor: Sight is an instrument for discovering the depth, colour and movement of the wonderful sights surrounding us, bearing different names in different languages. Hearing brings the unseen to life through the chirping birds, rustling leaves or the roaring waters. Smell carries invisible stories from the nearby bakery to the salty sea air. Taste connects us to a large panorama of flavours. Touch is the frame of this window through texture, temperature and solidity illuminating the physical reality of our surroundings. The students exhibit their drawings and tell a story focused on one of the senses.
